Community Partnership and Philanthropic Investment Expand the Future of Hockey in Central Iowa

URBANDALE, Iowa – The Des Moines Youth Hockey Association (DMYHA), Midwest Hockey Club (Warriors), and DM Rink Partners are proud to announce a new partnership focused on expanding ice opportunities for families throughout Central Iowa and the surrounding region.

Over the past nine months, these organizations have worked collaboratively on a vision to address one of the fastest-growing needs in the local sports community: increased access to ice. With the generous philanthropic support of Greg and Andrea Abel, that vision is becoming a reality through the complete renovation of the East Rink at Metro Ice Sports Facility in Urbandale.

As hockey participation continues to grow across Central Iowa, available ice time has become an increasingly valuable and limited resource. The renovation of the East Rink at Metro Ice represents a significant investment in the future of the sport, creating additional capacity for youth hockey and player development programs.

"This project is about far more than renovating a facility," said Scott Long, DMYHA Hockey Director. "It's about investing in young athletes, supporting families, and ensuring that our community has the resources needed to keep pace with the incredible growth of hockey in Central Iowa."

The leadership and generosity of Greg and Andrea Abel played a pivotal role in bringing this partnership together and transforming the vision into reality. Their commitment reflects a belief in the power of sports to build confidence, character, and lifelong connections while strengthening the broader community.

Once completed, the renovated Metro Ice facility will complement existing ice resources throughout the region and help create new opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels. The additional ice availability will support continued growth in youth hockey programs while helping meet the increasing demand from families across Central Iowa.

"This is a tremendous example of what can happen when community organizations, private partners, and philanthropic leaders work together toward a common goal," said Long. "The impact of this project will be felt for generations of athletes and families."

The partnership between DMYHA, the Midwest Hockey Club, DM Rink Partners, and the Abel family represent a shared commitment to growing the game of hockey while ensuring greater access to ice for current and future generations.

As the renovated Metro Ice facility prepares to welcome athletes back to the rink, the project stands as a landmark investment in the future of youth sports and recreation in Central Iowa.
